Obviously it can do major damage for CoC when paired with a Captain, but is it flexible enough for all scenarios? If its lost early, would the rest of my force be too weak?

It'd probably depend on which siege engine you took. A balister/siege bow probably wouldn't take up too many points and would work best in a support role. A catapult/trebuchet would use up more points (especially if it has a troll attached, although on the other hand, the troll could also be used to protect the catapult against all but determined attacks, or even go off with the main force to do damage). Further, if you've built the force around the weapon, then it probably will be too weak once the weapon is destroyed; if you've included the weapon to supplement your force, then you should have built a strong, solid core anyway and the loss of the weapon would only slightly harm your shooting phase.

Had the force, now ammending it to include Cata with Troll and Cap instead of Gothmog and bows, so not too much extra cost. Think I will have to seriously playtest it though (and buy it/paint it of course!!)

I can see them as a support weapon in Tourneys - i.e. a nice Avenger firing into a contigent of Wargs riding for one of the objectives. However, you would really have to know what the scenarios are before hand. You could pick a balancing type army like Gondor and make a nice well balanced force with the Avenger included. Try out some new lists, think of tactics for each scenario. You can probably make it work.

Bit expensive though to buy it, assemble it, paint it, playtest it....then disregrd it! Might use a Trebuchet stand-in till I'm definite

Hith used one last year and whilst interesting IIRC it didn't prove to be as impressive as hoped.

Hith also took the Heads Upgrade, maybe this is something to consider, have a look at the rules cause I don't think it is to expensive. Can be very effective especielly if you have something giving a minus to courage like a Wraith.

Very cheap upgrade, and would allow the Catapult to continue to influence the game once combat is met. Might be annoying though, move into combat, Good fail all there Courage tests and theres no-one left for me to kill!!

If you are going to fire severed heads you are going to have to use an Evil Catapult. An extra crew member and the upgrade "Severed Heads" added onto a Mordor Catapult totals 100 Points. Even though this is relatively cheap - keep in mind, you are using it on an open battle-field, the crew members have cr@p shoot values, and it does have a minimum range of 18 inches.
For these reasons I think, if you were to use a Siege Engine in a Tourney the Avenger Bolt Thrower would be good. You want to avoid Evil Siege Engines in my opinion because the shoot values, combined with the scatter chart, and the terrain make it very hard to score enough wounds to defray the cost of the engine.
The only problem with Good Siege Engines is the fact that they will not fire if they have a chance of hitting and killing one of their own, which will almost force your models to set up defensively to get as many shots out of the Bolt Thrower as possible.

[glow=green,2,300]I agree with High Elven Lord, I remember WD no. 314 and it's Shadow in the East battle report: The Gondorian's Trebuchet was taken out in turn 5 and it had only destroyed the Khandish king's Chariot! I much prefer bolt throwers, they are like giant cross bows and they don't have a minimum range....(I don't think so anyway)..... [/glow]
