During the 4th Century B.C. the Romans used an interesting battle formation with Hastati and Leves in front, followed by Principes, followed by Triarii, with the least competent warriors - Rorarii and Accensi in back. I have came to the conclusion that the nearest LotR class for each type of Roman warrior is as follows:
Leves - Warrior of Rohan w/ Shield or reg. Warrior of Rohan
Hastati - Warrior of Rohan w/ Shield and Throwing Spear
Principes - Warriors of Minas Tirith w/ Shield and Sword and/or an Elite Heavily Armoured Unit/Warrior.
Triarii - Warriors of Minas Tirith w/ Shield and Spear
The Rorarii and Accensi in this case would be the weakest units of the force, however, considering the limitations and numbers in LotR SBG I have excluded them.
So, here's what I am going to try:
Captain of Rohan w/ Shield, HA, and TS
Faramir, Captain of Gondor w/ HA
13 Warriors of Rohan w/ Shield and TS
10 Warriors of MT w/ Shield and Spear
7 Warriors of Rohan w/ Shield
5 Warriors of MT w/ Shield
5 GotFC w/ Shield
1 Warrior of Gondor w/ Banner
Basically, the 7 Warriors of Rohan w/ Shield act as a human shield - basically the attached Leves to the Hastati group. As they approach combat the Captain and his Spear Throwers (the Hastati) will unleash the Spears on the enemy.
The Leves will engage the enemy along with a portion of the Spear Throwers - this will hopefully serve to break up the enemy lines a bit. The rest of the Spears retreat to the back or the flanks of my force while the GotFC, Shieldsmen and Faramir ram into a broken enemy front line (heroic move if necessary) - supported by the MT Spears and Banner.
In theory, it sounds good, only problem would be no Calvary and no bow power. However, in larger games (700 Points) I would add in another hero (a Ranger Hero) and some Rangers. How do you think this will work?
