As many have noticed from my posts on both sites, I'm getting ready for my first Grand Tournement. I have spent so long with Isengard, I wanted to do something new, and the arrival of the plastic Morannon Orcs have led me towards the Land of the Shadow!
Rather than a hardcore unit of high D, high FV and high S Uruks, I'm aiming for a mix of strong morannon, and plenty of orcs to envelop and hammer the opponents. The question is, should I have a siege weapon to force the opponent to spread out, and try and target it rather than my infantry? Or should I take an uber-hero and a few more units, as well as volleying bows? For the Good force, I'm returning to my roots and taking a Gondor force. Although there is the same temptation to take uber-heroes (Gandalf, Boro CotWT and Imrahil), I'm going to go for several medium level heroes (Faramir, Angbor and Cirion as well as the Sniper), a few elites and a strong body of D6 WOMT. Even if its basic, and not very imaginitive, it should serve me well.
So there it is. A blog of my minds strange wanderings. Only two and a half months to go, should get everything I need for Xmas and my birthday, then its plenty of painting, basing, playtesting and preparing for a great weekend of gaming!

I hink that the question of whether or not to have a siege engine depends on your style of play. Althoguh I've nevr used one, I'd imagine that siege weapons are a fairly defensive style weapon, used for thining your enemy's ranks. The downside is, if I recall correctly, they have a minimum range, so you'll need bows to continue to attack at range (otherwise, your oponant may just sit within the min range and pummel you with his bows until you advance). If you really want a siege weapon, then I'd suggest a balista/siege bow which are probably more flexable than catapults.

I'm personally considering taking a siege engine for my Gondor force, namely the Trebuchet; the security it can offer vs. Dragons and the like, as well as against Cavalry-heavy armies, is invaluable for the points it costs IMO.
See you at the GT!

Scenario: Opponent taking advantage of the RO loophole, thinking "hahaha! all my models huddled around Gamling means unlimited might! Woohoo". Big rock comes over, takes out Gamling and the Area Effect wounds and unhorses each and every one of them. Craig smiles.
Scenario: GC army realises the potential of the Catapult, and must spread itself out. Unable to volley, can be taken out piecemeal. Craig smiles.
Scenario: Champ takes two Trebuchets, fires first and takes out first the Troll, then the Captain, then the Catapult itself. Craig stabs Champ. Craig smiles again.

There is no Rohan Outrider loophole now IIRC Stats cannot be raised higher than their starting level - thus ROs cannot have might above 0 Now if I was going to go Siege engine would either be something like 3 avengers each with Rapid Fire and an Engineer Captain for 3d6 might effected S7 shootiness or Mordor Catapult with Troll for 2 shots and again Captain for the might.
