The Time Traveler
Written By Peter Rushton
It’s a stormy night, the clouds as black as you can imagine. Thunder like no other, Gary had just one thought on his mind, get to safety. Returning from Mr.Mith’s house, a man of great wisdom who by the way is Gary’s tutor. Gary was fascinated by Mr.Mith. They both shared a love for physics. Gary, age 11 was top of his class; his favorite subject was of course, Physics. Gary would read book after book every night and read up notes he had made. He didn’t really have any friends; he would spend his time at school in clubs and occasionally read in the library.
“Gary, where have you been!?” Yelled Gary’s dad
“Mr.Mith said he is terribly sorry for my lateness” replied Gary
“Well, i guess that’s ok, but you know me and your mum worry about you” said Gary’s dad in a gentle Cardiff acent.
“I know, I know Dad” said Gary
“Well, its your bed time” said Gary’s dad
Gary, glanced at the time and replied
“But dad, its only 9o’clock” said the depressed Gary
“You know, if you get good sleep, you think straighter “ Gary’s dad smiled in a queer manner at Gary. Surpressing a sigh, Garry trudged upstairs to his room, which was free from the ridiculous rules of his parents.
He flopped onto his bed and took out his stress ball. Scrunch. Scrunch.
“I’m hungry,” Gary felt his tummy rumble. He ran downstairs and met his mum in the kitchen.
“Mum, I’m hungry,”
“You know, if you eat better, you think straighter.” His mum said and gave a slightly bent smile. So Gary decided to eat some tuna, because tuna is brain food. Or so his parents said…
So after eating a large amount of tuna, Gary went to bed. He yawned and got into bed, without remembering to brush his teeth. Finally he drifted off to sleep, dreaming of physics, because Gary loved physics with all the quantum matter in the world.
THE NEXT DAY
The next morning, Gary woke up feeling straighter, because when you sleep you grow longer. His brother was staring at him from the doorway. Slowly, his brother crept forward, like how a mad axe murderer might creep up on you. In his hand, he held his stress ball. Scrunch. Scrunch.
“What are you doing in my room Simon?”
“Big brother…”
“This isn’t the time for Duel Monsters!”
“But big brother…you promised! I love card games, just like you love physics!”
“Ahh, physics, my one true love.” Gary smiled happily and drifted into a daydream about the Clockwork Universe.
“Big brother! Why are you daydreaming? If you think straighter, you’ll think straighter.”
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“GOODBYE.” Simon smiled strangely at his brother and disappeared into Gary’s wardrobe. Then he walked out again and walked out of the right door. Gary stood where his brother had been and decided to play with his stress ball. Scrunch. Scrunch.
Just as Gary had finished getting changed, Gary’s dad came in.
“So son, did you sleep well and think straighter this morning?” There was something repressed about Gary’s dad’s smile.
“Why yes father, I slept marvelously!” Gary smiled back at his father.
“That’s good. Goodbye, I’m off to work.” Gary’s dad put on his business hat and walked out of the room.
Gary then held up his dad’s briefcase and waited a moment before his dad reappeared at the door.
”Thanks Gary. Wait don’t you have something to do today? What’s the word…School?”
“Meh.”
“Gary, if you don’t go to school, you’ll never think straight!” Gary’s eyes widened in horror.
