Phalanx?
All you have to do is engage the front with some high defence warriors that can take a beating (ex. Elven spearmen with shields and heavy armor), then, surround it, and send some cavalry crushing through its back.

High Elves can be hard to counter a phalanx with. You usually have 13-16 points per model in a High Elf force - where as other Phalanx toting armies (Gondor - Easties - Uruk Hai) can create armies that spend an average of 10-13 points per model. This combined with the fact that High Elves do not YET have Calvary, and do not have Pikes, can make countering the Phalanx very hard.
It might be smart to ally in this situation, other-wise, my best advice would be to anchor your force against some difficult terrain, or otherwise try to force them into situations where they can't put out a full battle-line, try to make them decide: "Should I throw in a Pike and have my warriors potentially trapped? Or should I take my chances with 2 attacks?" You really have to rely on the High Fight Value, Shielding, and Spear support.

Firstly, what kind of phalanx are we talking about here? Uruks or Easterlings? Secondly, one of the best ways to deal with a phalanx is to shoot it and create gaps in the lines, then hit it with a cavalry charge. If your using Isengard that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Shoot with X-bows and then charge with Warg Riders. If using "High" Elves it becomes a bit more problematic since, as High Elven Lord pointed out, they do not yet have any cavalry. Your best bet would be to shoot down as much of the first and second ranks as possible, and then finish them off with some Elves armed with swords, possibly backed up by those with spears.
Good luck

Slight flaw in the rules, surely, when the best weapon against pikemen is cavalry!!!! IIRC my history of 17th Century warfare, wasn't it sword and bucklermen, Spanish I believe, that proved the bane of phalanx armed troops (just as centuries earlier the gladius armed Roman legionary was to end for c 1500 years the use of phalanxes)?

With my Elves I aim for pikemen in the middle especially against Uruk Hai as they tend to protect their sides with shield armed guys.
The guys on the outside just count as in the way Killing the middle guys breaks up their ranks and they're easier to kill.

use a powerful hero to smash through and then use your troops to support him if your elves
if using rohan use lots of bows to wear him down and then charge with cavalry- works a treat with my friends easterlings, as his best heros are captains on foot, hich i easily ride down even with my average riders.

I can't really add anything already said, other than this: you've got the strongest bows in the game for a reason - use them!! That, combined with the high Fight Value, should be enough to hold off the phalanx. Another thing would be to draw back into an area where they can't fit the intire block (two pieces of terrain, for example) and then take potshots at the now un-supported troops. Cheers, -mike

A phalanx is where you have... A row of shieldsmen A row os pikes or spears A row of Pikesmen They are nasty in the game as they pack a punch of 3 attack when if you win you can only kill 1 of them . Within experience you learn to take them down though and thanks to the guys here no phalanx has beat me in a month

I back up my gobbos with spears now in my Balins Tomb game. It's actually really helpful.

Yup, just using spears is a battleline really. A phalanx is also a battleline but has 3 rows rather than two because pikes are extra long so can back up your troops further away.
